Nowadays Cowane’s Hospital is run by the Cowane’s Hospital Maintenance Trust (CHMT) which was set up to give this beautiful 17th century almshouse a secure future at the heart of the community. CHMT has two part-time staff and a board of trustees.
Our £3m project would see the partial restoration of the building and its wonderful gardens, which include Scotland’s oldest bowling green, and the creation of a new visitor centre telling the story of the hospital, of charity and of Stirling through the centuries.
Cowane’s Hospital is a rare survival of this kind of building and of great historic importance for the people of Stirling, for Scotland and for visitors worldwide. CMHT is a registered Scottish Charity No SC042873.
CHMT is a separate from the Patrons of Cowane’s Hospital Trust, Scotland’s second oldest functioning charity, which provides relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage through the provision of housing, and in particular special needs housing, in Stirling.
